Maternity Poses That Flatter, Empower, and Tell Your Story

From a Metro Detroit Maternity Photographer Who’s Posed Hundreds of Mamas

Hi, I’m Kat from Kat Figlak Photography, and if you’re reading this, chances are you’re either pregnant (congratulations!) or planning a maternity photoshoot and wondering one very common question:

“How am I supposed to pose?”

As one of the Metro Detroit maternity photographers who specializes in fine art maternity imagery, I can promise you this: you do not need modeling experience, flexibility, or confidence walking into your session. That’s my job — and it’s one I take very seriously.

Today I want to walk you through maternity posing in a way that feels natural, empowering, and real — not stiff or forced — so you can feel excited, not nervous, about your photoshoot.

Why Maternity Posing Is Different

Maternity posing isn’t about pretending you’re not pregnant — it’s about celebrating your body exactly as it is in this moment. My goal is always to highlight the baby bump while keeping you comfortable, supported, and confident.

Every body, every pregnancy, and every comfort level is different. Whether you’re coming from Birmingham, Rochester, Troy, Clarkston, Shelby Township, Romeo, or Macomb, my approach stays the same: intentional posing that flatters you.

The Foundation of Every Maternity Pose: Angles

One of the first things I explain during maternity sessions is that angles matter more than poses.

I almost always position my mamas:

  • Slightly turned sideways (never straight on)

  • With weight shifted to one leg

  • With shoulders relaxed and chin gently angled

This instantly creates a flattering silhouette and brings attention to the baby bump without making anything feel exaggerated or awkward.

As a Metro Detroit maternity photographer, I’ve learned that small adjustments make the biggest difference — and you don’t have to think about any of them. I guide you through every movement.

Hands: The Most Important (and Most Overthought) Detail

Hands are often what clients worry about most, but they’re also one of my favorite storytelling tools.

Some of my go-to hand placements include:

  • One hand above the bump, one below

  • Both hands softly cradling the belly

  • One hand resting on the bump, the other brushing hair or fabric

  • Hands gently overlapping (never gripping)

The key is softness. I’ll often say things like, “Pretend your baby is listening” or “Rest your hands like you’re holding something delicate.” That emotional connection shows beautifully on camera.

Standing Poses: Elegant and Timeless

Standing maternity poses are the backbone of most sessions because they’re flattering, versatile, and timeless.

Some of my favorite standing variations include:

  • Profile poses that fully showcase the bump

  • Gentle movement (a step, a sway, fabric flowing)

  • Looking toward the camera, then away for variety

  • Natural smiles mixed with soft, emotional expressions

These poses photograph beautifully whether we’re shooting in studio or outdoors in places like Rochester, Lake Orion, Washington Township, or Bloomfield Hills.

Seated Poses: Soft, Intimate, and Relaxed

Not everyone feels comfortable standing for long periods — especially later in pregnancy — and that’s perfectly okay.

Seated maternity poses allow for:

  • Relaxed shoulders and posture

  • More intimate, emotional imagery

  • A break while still creating stunning photos

I often use stools, chairs, or floor posing with support to keep everything comfortable and flattering. These poses are wonderful for showcasing gowns, bare-belly images, or quiet, reflective moments.

Walking & Movement Poses: When You Don’t Want to “Pose”

If the idea of posing makes you nervous, movement is your best friend.

Walking slowly, turning gently, or interacting with your dress creates images that feel candid and effortless. Movement also helps release tension, which results in more natural expressions.

Many of my clients from Macomb, Sterling Heights, Utica, and Clinton Township tell me these end up being their favorite images because they feel the most “them.”

Partner & Family Posing: Connection First

When partners or children are included, my focus shifts from posing to connection.

I guide families into:

  • Gentle embraces that frame the bump

  • Foreheads touching or soft kisses

  • Children interacting naturally with the belly

  • Laughing moments mixed with quiet ones

These images aren’t about perfection — they’re about emotion. They tell the story of anticipation, love, and the family you’re becoming.

What You Don’t Have to Worry About

As one of the Metro Detroit maternity photographers who works closely with mamas from consultation to final artwork, I want you to hear this clearly:

You do not need to worry about:

  • How to stand

  • Where to put your hands

  • What to do with your face

  • Whether your body looks “right”

That’s my responsibility. Your only job is to show up and trust the process.

Posing That Feels Luxurious, Not Awkward

Luxury maternity photography isn’t about stiff posing — it’s about intention, comfort, and care.

I guide every pose slowly, adjust details thoughtfully, and make sure you feel supported the entire time. The result is imagery that feels elevated, emotional, and timeless — photos you’ll want to display as archival wall art or preserve in a handcrafted album long after your baby arrives.

Why Experience Matters in Maternity Posing

Maternity photography requires a trained eye, patience, and an understanding of how pregnancy changes the body.

As a photographer serving Oakland County and Macomb County, I’ve spent years perfecting poses that:

  • Highlight the bump without exaggeration

  • Flatter all body types

  • Prioritize comfort and safety

  • Create confidence on camera

That experience allows my clients to relax — and that relaxation shows in every image.  As one of the leading Metro Detroit maternity photographers, I work with expecting mothers throughout Oakland and Macomb County to create timeless, fine art maternity portraits.
