Top Outdoor Senior Photo Locations in Oakland County, Michigan

By Kat Figlak, Kat Figlak Photography

When it comes to senior photos, location matters — a lot. As an Oakland County senior photographer, one of the questions I get asked most often by both parents and seniors is, “Where should we take senior pictures?” And honestly? We’re incredibly lucky here in Oakland County, Michigan. From charming downtown areas to scenic parks and waterfront views, there’s no shortage of beautiful outdoor locations for unforgettable senior portraits.

As someone who has photographed several high school seniors across Northern Oakland County, I love helping my clients choose locations that feel authentic, fun, and timeless — places that reflect who they are right now while still standing the test of time when you look back years from now.

Here are some of my favorite top outdoor senior photo locations in Oakland County, Michigan, and why they work so beautifully for senior sessions.

Downtown Clarkston, MI

Perfect for seniors who want charm, character, and personality

Downtown Clarkston is hands-down one of my most requested senior photo locations — and for good reason. With its brick sidewalks, historic buildings, cozy storefronts, and small-town charm, it offers a relaxed but stylish backdrop that feels effortlessly cool.

For seniors, downtown Clarkston feels fun and relatable. For parents, it feels classic and timeless. It’s one of those rare locations that truly bridges both worlds. We can capture a variety of looks here — from urban-inspired portraits to softer, more natural images — all within walking distance.

This location is especially popular with Clarkston High School seniors and those looking for senior pictures that feel modern but not trendy.

Deer Lake Beach & Park

Ideal for natural, scenic, and sunset-loving seniors

If you love water, trees, open skies, and golden-hour light, Deer Lake is an absolute dream. Located right in the heart of Clarkston, Deer Lake offers a mix of sandy beach areas, wooded trails, grassy fields, and peaceful waterfront views.

This is one of my go-to spots for seniors who want photos that feel relaxed, confident, and natural. Sunset sessions here are stunning — the light reflects off the water beautifully and creates that soft, glowing look everyone loves.

Deer Lake is a favorite for Northern Oakland County senior photography because it offers variety without feeling overly busy or crowded.

Downtown Rochester, MI

A polished, upscale look with city charm

For seniors who want something a little more elevated, downtown Rochester is a fantastic option. Think beautiful architecture, bridges, river views, and manicured walkways. It has a more refined, editorial feel compared to some other locations, which parents often love — and seniors appreciate how “put together” the images feel.

This area works especially well for seniors who enjoy fashion-forward outfits or want a slightly more sophisticated vibe to their portraits.

Rochester is also a great choice for Rochester High School, Stoney Creek, and Adams seniors looking for variety in one location.

Lake Orion & Paint Creek Trail

Laid-back, outdoorsy, and full of movement

Lake Orion and the Paint Creek Trail are perfect for seniors who love the outdoors and want their session to feel casual and adventurous. These locations offer beautiful walking paths, tall grasses, bridges, and natural textures that photograph beautifully throughout the seasons.

This area is especially great for seniors who want photos that feel authentic, relaxed, and not overly posed. We can walk, talk, laugh, and create images that truly feel like you.

Addison Oaks County Park

Wide open spaces and classic Michigan beauty

Addison Oaks is one of those locations that truly showcases Michigan’s natural beauty. With rolling hills, tall trees, open fields, and lake views, it offers a more traditional outdoor look that parents often gravitate toward — but still feels fresh and current for seniors.

This park works beautifully in late summer and fall, especially for seniors who love greenery and natural landscapes. It’s also ideal for longer sessions where we want multiple backdrops in one place.

Orion Oaks County Park

Rustic, peaceful, and incredibly photogenic

Orion Oaks is perfect for seniors who want something a little quieter and more rustic. The trails, trees, and open fields provide a calm, natural environment that allows personality to shine through.

This location is especially beautiful in the fall but works year-round for seniors who want photos that feel organic and timeless.

Why Location Matters for Senior Photos

Choosing the right location isn’t just about pretty scenery — it’s about how a senior feels during their session. When seniors are comfortable in their environment, their confidence shows. Their smiles are more natural. Their personality comes through.

As an Oakland County senior photographer, my job isn’t just to take photos — it’s to guide you through the entire experience, from choosing the perfect location to helping with outfits, posing, and artwork design.

Making Senior Photos an Experience (Not Just a Photoshoot)

At Kat Figlak Photography, senior sessions are designed to be fun, relaxed, and personalized. We plan locations intentionally based on the senior’s personality, interests, and style — whether that’s downtown Clarkston, a lakeside beach, or a scenic Oakland County park.

And for parents: these images don’t just live on your phone. Senior portraits are often the last professional photos taken before adulthood, and they deserve to be preserved. I offer archival wall art and luxury handcrafted albums so your senior’s images can be enjoyed for generations.
